A major attraction for all visitors to Jaipur is about 11 km north
of the town, Fort Amber (pronounced Amer!). Here was seven
centuries the capital of the Kachchwaha’s. On the top of a
mountain ridge above the valley, the huge palace perched with
the much older Jaigarh Fort. It reflects in the waters of the picturesque
Maoto Sagar lake which is at the feet of the mountain.
The palace is open to the public and is visited by tourists , the upper
part of the fortress is used by the military and houses a small museum
with the largest cannon on wheels.
The Amber Fort is named after the goddess Amba Mata, Mother Earth.
