Golden Temple in Amritsar
The Golden Temple, the holiest place to the Sikh, is located in Amritsar, in the Indian state of Punjab. The temple was built in the late 16th century, however, had to be rebuilt because of looting in the late 18th century. The Sikh leader Ranjit Singh paid from the Golden Temples gold and marble decorations in the early 19th century, which today can be visited. The temple itself is completely covered with gold leaf and stands on an island in the so-called nectar pond. Thereafter, the city of Amritsar was named (nectar / Amrit and pond / Sar). In nectar pond, the faithful wash themselves before they visit the temple. According to the beliefs of the Sikhs, karma is improved by the dip in the holy water.
